Feral goats are the main threat to the ecosystem of the Washington Slagbaai National Park

Overgrazing by feral goats is one of the most serious threats to terrestrial ecosystems within Washington Slagbaai National Park (WSNP). Continued grazing of goats has led to a serious degradation of the park’s ecosystem.

As management body of the park, STINAPA Bonaire is responsible for improving the quality of resources in the WSNP. The organisation takes high priority eradicating the invasive grazers present in the park.

In 2020, a new strategy was adopted. Small areas (roughly 5% of the park each) are fenced off, which makes the removal of goats easier. It simultaneously prevents the risk of recolonization. Goats are removed from these exclusion areas using a combination of traditional hunting methods and shooting.

BonBèrdè has been included since the start of this project. We are responsible for all the fencing within the Slagbaai area of the park. In total, BonBèrdè installed close to 15 kilometers of fencing. We furthermore support the eradication program with local hunting expertise.
